A countywide road safety strategy has been launched to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries to motorists, riders and pedestrians on Northamptonshire’s roads.
Road safety in Northamptonshire has improved significantly over the last 20 years, and the number of people killed and seriously injured on the county’s roads is at the lowest level since 1960, when figures were first recorded – despite the fact that the county’s roads are busier than ever before.
Despite this, 279 people were killed or seriously injured in road traffic collisions in Northamptonshire in 2017.
Now Northamptonshire Police, Northamptonshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service and Northamptonshire County Council have come together as a Strategic Roads Alliance to develop and implement a new plan that will guide actions to make Northamptonshire’s roads and footpaths safer for everyone who uses them.
The plan brings together each of the partner organisations who have responsibility for different aspects of road safety – road design and engineering, enforcement, education and the continued monitoring of the steps taken towards improving road safety in Northamptonshire.
Together they will focus on the five key areas for activity: safer roads, safer speeds, safer vehicles and the response to, and investigation of, collisions.
Northamptonshire Police and Crime Commissioner Stephen Mold said: “Every person who dies or is injured on our roads is one too many. Northamptonshire lies at the heart of the country’s strategic roads network and making sure that people can travel safely in and through our county is a key priority for everyone who lives here.
“This strategy is a very important piece of work where each of the key partners with a shared responsibility for road safety, contribute to a shared vision of reducing harm to all road users in Northamptonshire.”
Chief Superintendent Mick Stamper, said: “As first responders, the police know all too well how road fatalities and casualties devastate families and communities. Each collision and injury is traumatic for everyone involved and as the Commissioner has said, one death or injury is one too many. We understand this and are working hard to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on Northamptonshire’s roads.
“The Safer Roads Alliance is an exciting partnership because it will work together, across a number of organisations and in a number of different ways to make the roads and paths in Northamptonshire and hopefully reduce the number of collisions that happen in the future.”
John Spencer, Casualty Reduction Manager, said: “Road safety remains a priority for the Council and the Safer Roads Alliance will ensure that we work more closely together with our partners by bringing together a range of skills, expertise and resources.
“We will strive to improve the quality of life for people living, working and travelling within Northamptonshire by reducing collisions, casualties and anti-social driving behaviour on the county road network.”
