Firefighter pledges to raise thousands for cancer charity

A firefighter has pledged to raise £2,500 for a cancer charity and is being supported in his efforts by crewmates at Wellingborough Fire Station.

Firefighter Ronnie Sherratt, of White Watch Wellingborough, will be running this year’s marathon for Macmillan Cancer Support.

And crews at Wellingborough have stepped in to help him reach his fundraising total by holding a Macmillan Coffee Morning at the station in Irthlingborough Road on June 20 (10am-2pm).

Visitors will be welcomed along to enjoy coffee, tea and cakes with their local firefighters, all in aid of a good cause.

This is the second time Ronnie has run the London Marathon as he did it for the first time last year, raising £4,600 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

He said:I’m thrilled to be running the marathon again for Macmillan, which is such a worthwhile charity and which provides incredible support to people with cancer, and their families, when they need it the most.

“I know people personally who have received support from the charity, and I’m pleased to do whatever I can to raise money to put towards their valuable work.

“I’m also grateful to all the team at Wellingborough Fire Station who are also supporting the charity and my fundraising efforts to host this community coffee morning. I hope it helps the local community come together to support a great cause.”

To help raise this year’s target, Ronnie is also acting as DJ at a charity ‘school disco’ event, for which tickets have already sold out.

Macmillan is almost entirely funded by donations and simply cannot support the growing number of people with cancer who need them without the public’s help. Every two minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer. There are over 2.5 million people living with cancer in the UK and this is set to grow to almost 4 million by 2030.

Macmillan is a cancer support charity giving personal, one to one care to thousands of people every day. Macmillan supports anyone, no matter their age, where they live and/ or their cancer diagnosis. They help everyone with cancer live life as fully as they can, providing physical, financial and emotional support.

Keen bakers are also asked to get in touch with Wellingborough Fire Station if they are willing and able to donate a cake for the event. Anyone who would like to help, can email white20@northantsfire.gov.uk
