Stay alert – unexpected callers

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) are asking people to be alert to unexpected callers after a man claiming to be from the fire service tried to get access to business premises in the north of the county last week.

The man said that he was making checks and asked to be allowed to look round the business premises. Fortunately staff at the site refused to let him in and asked him to leave. They reported the matter and are currently working with NFRS to see if he can be identified.

Now NFRS is urging business to be alert to any strange caller and stressing that although they do sometimes call at premises without an appointment, they always carry photo ID and that should always be checked.

Scott Richards, Community Protection Manager at NFRS said: “While we will attend some premises unannounced, due to a complaint about fire safety standards for example, this is only done in the minority of cases. Predominantly officers will arrange visits in advance and in all cases they will have their photographic identification with them.  We would urge all businesses to always take appropriate measures to protect yourselves and your premise. If you are visited by a fire officer and unsure of their purpose or validity please ask to see their identification and, if you are in any doubt, call us on 01604 797000.”
