Thrapston Fire Station is based on the High Street and is crewed by 10 on-call firefighters who respond to incidents when they are alerted.

The High Street site is also a joint Police Station, with the fire crew being based downstairs but sharing a good rapport with their police colleagues who are based upstairs. The fire service moved to the building having previously been based at Huntingdon Road and the council offices.

Thrapston is a small market town within East Northamptonshire district and has a traditional mix of residential property types. The wider station area is mostly rural and includes the villages of Islip, Woodford, Twywell, Titchmarsh, Sudborough and Wadenhoe. Altogether this means the crew cover a population of more than 10,000, while new housing means the number is constantly growing.

The station has a main fire engine pump but also has an Initial Intervention Vehicle which can be called to road traffic collisions. A stretch of the A14, junction 13, is within the patch, as is the A45, the A6116 and the A605 – all of which can be regular call outs for the crew.

The crew at Thrapston attend a variety of incidents including house fires, floods, RTCs and even animal rescues in some of its more rural areas. They can attend anywhere between 100 and 250 incidents in a typical year, and also act as Emergency First Responders should paramedics be unable to attend an incident involving a medical emergency.

Flooding and water rescue can present a significant risk to the community, with large water presences at the Gravel Pit boating lakes as well as significant stretches of the River Nene. There are also 70 residential and 41 commercial properties that are indicated as ‘at risk’ for potential flooding – with action plans ready and waiting should such an event occur.

There is also the potential to be called to industrial incidents, with large business parks to both the west and east of Thrapston, with the major landmarks being the distribution centres for both Primark and Morrisons.

The crew has also made sure to embed itself in the local community. It regularly carries out visits to Thrapston Primary School and the village nursery, while they also attend secondary schools within the patch and engage with Year 11 students to discuss risks associated with becoming a new driver.

They will also attend community events such as the Thrapston Charter Fayre and the Christmas Light celebrations, and crews continue to offer safety checks to members of the public when they are out and about.
